With a potential TikTok ban looming, Instagram is carpe-ing the diem and launching their TikTok competitor feature, Instagram Reels. Creators can mix them up with audio, AR effects, speed, clips, timers and other editing features now live in the IG app. Like Stories, Reels will disappear after 24 hours unless you save & share it.
Reels will be featured on a new tab on the Explore page, if you have a public-facing account, and offer creators a chance to reach a whole new audience. The challenge? Reels are 15 seconds long, max, compared to TikTok’s 60 second limit. Studies show that most people only watch the first 10-15 seconds of a video, so the time limit does make sense.
