As Online Shopping Moves to AI Chatbots, YouTube Creator Content Is Taking on a New Role
With consumers expected to turn to AI for holiday shopping at record levels, new MagicLinks data points to a growing role for credible YouTube creator content in shaping AI-powered product discovery. YouTube was cited in one in four AI shopping answers, versus 0.2% for TikTok.
LOS ANGELES, October 14, 2026 — As consumers turn to AI to decide what to buy this holiday season, YouTube creators are shaping many of the answers. A new MagicLinks analysis of more than 224,000 AI-generated answers to shopping questions found that one in four AI answers cited a YouTube video. Just 0.2% cited TikTok, and none cited Instagram.
YouTube’s influence was strongest on the questions closest to a purchase decision. It was cited in half of AI answers to “what’s the best…” and “what’s the best value…” questions, the kinds of comparison and gift-discovery questions holiday shoppers are bringing to AI. According to Narvar’s 2026 Holiday Shopping Report, 65% of consumers plan to use AI for holiday shopping, most often for gift discovery (43%) and product comparisons and reviews (33%).
Creator content now has two ways to influence discovery: when a consumer watches it directly, and when an AI system surfaces it as a source for someone else's question.
Brands Can Influence the Answer, and Quickly
A leading national retailer partnered with MagicLinks on an AEO-focused YouTube creator campaign to strengthen its AI visibility in Korean skincare. Using AI Shelf™, MagicLinks identified the questions shoppers were asking AI about the category, and briefed creators to answer them directly, rather than simply feature a product.
Within two weeks of publishing, every sponsored video was cited by Gemini, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, a 100% sponsored video citation rate. Over the measurement period, the retailer also saw a 15.7% increase in its AI Authority Index and a six-position improvement in its Korean skincare category ranking.
AI citations are never guaranteed, but the results show that creator content can be built intentionally for AI discovery, and that its authority impact can be measured.
“Shoppers are asking AI what to buy right now, and creators on YouTube are shaping a lot of those answers,” said Brian Nickerson, MagicLinks Co-founder and CEO. “The best creator partnerships have always created value for the brand, the creator and the consumer. AI adds a new dimension. When credible creator content surfaces in an AI answer, it introduces consumers not just to a product, but to a creator whose expertise they may never have found otherwise.”
There’s Still Time to Shape Holiday 2026
This holiday season will be a major proving ground for AI-powered shopping, and consumers want creators in the mix. IAB research found that 65% of consumers feel more confident in AI recommendations informed by credible creator reviews. Yet Narvar found just 8% of retailers say they are very confident in their ability to use AI to improve the shopping experience.
Because sponsored creator videos can be cited within weeks of publishing, brands that activate AEO-focused YouTube campaigns this fall can still influence the AI answers shoppers see during peak holiday weeks. And unlike a traditional media buy that stops delivering when the campaign ends, creator content can remain discoverable over time.
That changes the investment case for creator marketing: brands aren't simply creating content for a single campaign or retail moment; they're building a durable body of credible content that can keep shaping how they appear in AI-generated answers.
MagicLinks AI Shelf™ connects AI intelligence to creator activation: measuring where brands have or lack authority across relevant AI queries, using those insights to inform and launch AEO-focused YouTube creator campaigns, and tracking how visibility, citations, and authority evolve over time.
In an AI-first future, creator content – especially on YouTube – isn't losing relevance. It's becoming another major channel for influencing discovery.
