How to Make Money on Snapchat: Using Snapchat Spotlight

Yup – we’re serious. Figuring out how to make money on Snapchat just got easier, because Snapchat will now PAY YOU, just for using their new Spotlight feature. Why? Snapchat is quickly becoming the Kourtney Kardashian of social media platforms: It’s semi-popular, it’s appreciated, but it’s not seen as a major moneymaker like TikTok (Kylie), Instagram (Kendall), or YouTube (Kim). Because of this loss of market share, Snapchat is incentivizing creators back to the platform by paying creators to upload Snaps to Spotlight. If the content gets tons of views & likes, Snapchat pays.

This unprecedented power move means Snapchat intends to move beyond a private messaging platform to capture a share of the viral video industry, which could lead to even more creator monetization opportunities!

For the foreseeable future, Snapchat is giving away up to $1,000,000.00 USD a day. Accordingly, this makes them the highest-paying social media platform. Even if this revenue share doesn’t last forever, creators should take the opportunity to learn how to make money on Snapchat Spotlight? Keep reading!

What Is Snapchat Spotlight, and How Do I Make Money On Snapchat Spotlight?

Snapchat Spotlight, like Instagram Reels, is a new short-form video feature in the app, angling to recapturing some of their lost traffic from TikTok. Content that performs well is making some creators thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars – millions, in some cases!

How Do I Submit My Snaps to SnapChat Spotlight for Potential Payment?

Super simple!

  1. First, make sure you’ve got the latest version of the Snapchat app
  2. Next, create or upload your Snap – up to 60 seconds long
  3. Then, type in one or more topics (#topic) to categorize your Snap
  4. Next, select ‘Spotlight’ at the top of the Send To screen
  5. Finally, tap the blue ▷icon to submit your Snap for review

How Do I Check to See If Snapchat Accepted My Snap for Potential Monetization?

Navigate to your Snapchat profile and tap on the Snap you submitted. A status of “Submitted” means your Snap isn’t yet live in Spotlight, but s ‘Live’ status means your Snap is live on Spotlight, and can be seen by more Snapchatters! If it performs well, you get paid!

How Do I Watch Other Creators’ Snapchat Spotlights?

Tap the play ▷icon in the lower right corner of the app. Then, like on TikTok, keep swiping up as you watch Snaps. Subsequently, Snapchat will continue to present you with Snaps it thinks you’ll like.

What Makes a Snap Spotlight-Worthy?

Of course, creativity and originality, first and foremost, but there are rules in place. Snapchat is looking for the best content out there, so get those creative juices flowing. Just remember:

  1. Spotlights must be vertical videos (3:4 aspect ratio) with sound (no stills, horizontal, blurry, or text-only)
  2. Use Snapchat’s filters, sounds, lenses, and GIFs to make your content pop
  3. Avoid copyright infringement – use music from the licensed library of Sounds
  4. Ensure the content is appropriate for ages 13+
  5. No drugs, alcohol, weapons, gambling – you get the idea
  6. You may not solicit or sell products or services
  7. Sponsored or paid-for Snaps (i.e. brand deals) will be rejected

Can I Add MagicLinks and ObsessedWith. It to Make Money On Snapchat Spotlights?

So far as we know, yes! Tap the paperclip 📎 icon while editing your snap, and paste in your MagicLink affiliate link or ObsessedWith. It page link, along with a “Swipe Up” text or GIF. So long as you are not specifically selling a product(s) in your Snap, it should be acceptable by Snapchat’s Spotlight standards.

But… This Sounds Too Good to Be True. What’s the Downside?

Chiefly, the main issue seems to be Spotlight’s lack of a comment section. The engagement rate on Spotlight videos, therefore, is calculated solely by likes + the amount of time a user spends watching your content. Another potential issue is most Snapchat profiles are private, thus making it difficult to follow creators. With this in mind, you’ll need to allow followers to add you on Snap, if you want to build up a following brands will take note of.

In short, while this might sound like a get-rich-quick scam, it’s really a fun way to make a few extra (or a few extra thousand) bucks on Snapchat. Give it a go, and let us know how you fare in the comments!
