VidSummit brought together some of the sharpest minds in video, and we spent two days soaking up everything they had to say. Between packed sessions and hallway conversations, a few themes kept coming up: be smart about what you make, be intentional about how you share it, and build a channel that keeps working for you long after you hit publish.

Here are the top five takeaways and how you can apply them to your own channel.

‍

1. Borrow Proven Formats and Repackage Your Winners

From GroovyGavin's session, "How to Maximize Your Niche"

You don't have to reinvent the wheel every time you sit down to make a video. Some of the most successful creators start with a format that already works, whether that's a challenge, a ranking video, or a "day in the life," and apply it to their niche. The format is the proof of concept, but your perspective is what makes it yours.

A YouTube Short that takes off is your audience telling you what they want to see next. Turn it into a longer video that goes deeper on the idea. When you decide where to focus, remember you don't need to beat every polished channel out there. A focused niche where you can genuinely stand out will take you further than trying to compete with millions of creators on broad topics.

‍

2. Make Product Links Feel Natural

From Maha Abouelenein's session, "From Views to Trust"

Viewers can tell when a product is shoehorned into a video, and they can definitely tell when you actually use the product. The best product moments start with a real problem or a real moment in your life. Show the product in action, explain why you chose it over alternatives, and give your audience enough context to feel confident before they click.

Once you've earned that trust, make it easy to act on. Link every product you mention every time, and write clear descriptions so viewers know exactly what they're clicking. It also helps to have one home for everything. With MagicLinks, you can build an ObsessedWith.it storefront that gathers all your favorite products in one place, so viewers who want to shop never have to dig.

‍

3. Know Where and How People Watch

From Derral Eves' session, "The YouTube Formula 2.0"

Discovery and viewing don't always happen in the same place. A lot of viewers may find you on mobile, scrolling between other things. But longer, story-driven videos often get watched on a computer or TV, where people tend to skip less and are more willing to settle in, giving longer content room to breathe.

The bigger lesson here is to look past any single performance number. Dig into your traffic sources, the devices people are watching on, and how many of your viewers are new versus returning. Together, those numbers tell a much clearer story about what's working and who you're reaching than any one score can.

4. Win the First 30 Seconds, Then Deliver on The Promise

From Hudson Matter's session, "The Ultimate Retention Playbook"

Your title, thumbnail, and intro should all tell the same story. When they line up, viewers know exactly what they're getting and feel good about clicking. Then, pay it off quickly; nothing loses an audience faster than a video that takes too long to get to the point it promised.

From there, keep viewers curious. Tease what's coming up, raise new questions as you go, and give people a reason to stick around for the next section. A good benchmark to aim for is keeping about 75 to 80% of viewers past the 30-second mark. Your retention data will show you exactly where people drop off, so use it to spot patterns and tighten up future videos.

‍

5. Think of Your Channel as a Library, and Build for the Long Game

From Jenny Hoyos' session, "Welcome to VidSummit"

One breakout video can do a lot more than rack up views on its own. It can send new viewers straight into your back catalog. That's why it pays to keep older videos easy to find with playlists, end screens, and clear titles. Every video you've made is a potential entry point.

It also helps to think of each format as having its own job. Short-form is great for reaching new people, long-form lets you go deeper with the ones who stick around, and community spaces turn viewers into loyal fans. Most importantly, pick a format and a schedule you can actually sustain. Consistency beats burnout, and repurposing what already works is one of the easiest ways to keep showing up.

Wrap Up

The creators who win long-term aren't just chasing the next viral moment. They make smart choices about what to create, think carefully about how they share products, and build channels designed to grow over time.
