There are millions of people trying to make it as social media stars. Millions. It might even be billions, for all we know. So, how, in a sea of YouTube videos, Tweets, Insta pics, and Snaps, do you stand out and “make it”? How do you become the next Jaclyn Hill, SkyDoesMinecraft, Remodelaholic, or Grav3yardGirl, doing what you love for a living and getting paid REALLY well to do it?

Unfortunately, there’s no one secret to online success. (Sorry!!) But, there are some tips and tricks we can share with you that can help you focus your content and make your channels the best they can possibly be.

Stephen Sondheim had three strippers sing, “You Gotta Have A Gimmick,” in the musical Gypsy, and we can’t think of a better way to put it. What makes YOUR channel special? What are you bringing to your content vertical (beauty, cooking, gaming, etc) that no one else does?

Think about it. Brainstorm. Ask friends and family. Figure out what exactly makes you special, and capitalize on it.

People subscribe because they like you. They like to think of you as a peer and friend, so make sure your personality is evident in everything you post – scripts are fantastic, but don’t be afraid to deviate!

Top YouTubers are always connected. Everything they do is geared towards new posts – can I Insta or Snap this? Would this make a good vlog or Tweet?

Pro influencers also keep track of their channels and their niche with tools like Trackur, Social Mention, and Google Alerts. These help you find out when you’re mentioned or tagged, be alerted to breaking news in your vertical, and plan your posts to get max exposure.

Lots of YouTubers have gone viral creating new tags, like the Full Face Highlighter Challenge or the Cinnamon Challenge. Got an idea for the next must-do tag? Be the first to create the video, and tag all your fave influencers to give it a try!

Smart phones have GREAT cameras these days, but many top influencers also have professional equipment: Ring lights, soft boxes, cameras, backdrops, props, and editing software. If you want your content to look truly unique and professional, invest in quality equipment.

Also, consider hiring a professional photographer or videographer occasionally, so you can get non-selfie photos and make your content more varied. It’s great exposure for both you and the photographer/videographer!
